According to recent FDA statistics, foodborne illnesses kill over 10,000 people each year - with as much as 40 percent of these outbreaks being the result of poor handwashing and cross-contamination. The 20-minute video, titled “GMP Basics: Employee Hygiene Practices,” depicts food plant employees at work and demonstrates GMPs that relate to personal hygiene and employee practices, with a special focus on handwashing procedures.
Highlights include:
• A reenactment of an employee who makes a critical mistake: failing to properly wash his hands before work. By using a "glow" to depict the germs on this worker’s hands, the viewer can see how and where the germs are spread through his later actions.
• A demonstration of other GMPs relating to personal hygiene and employee practices, such as the removal of jewelry and the storage of food in designated places.
• An interactive segment in which viewers get the chance to test their knowledge and identify GMP violations in a typical food plant setting. The training video is designed to be part of an integrated training program and includes a facilitator’s guide for leading employee discussions.
